Studies in Rabbinic Narratives, Volume 1 By Jeffrey L. Rubenstein
2021 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 1951498798 | PDF | 3 MB
Explore new theoretical tools and lines of analysis of rabbinic stories Rabbinic literature includes hundreds of stories and brief narrative traditions. These narrative traditions often take the form of biographical anecdotes that recount a deed or event in the life of a rabbi. Modern scholars consider these narratives as didactic fictions―stories used to teach lessons, promote rabbinic values, and grapple with the tensions and conflicts of rabbinic life. Using methods drawn from literary and cultural theory, including feminist, structuralist, Marxist, and psychoanalytic methods, contributors analyze narratives from the Babylonian Talmud, midrash, Mishnah, and other rabbinic compilations to shed light on their meanings, functions, and narrative art. Contributors include Julia Watts Belser, Beth Berkowitz, Dov Kahane, Jane L. Kanarek, Tzvi Novick, James Adam Redfield, Jay Rovner, Jeffrey L. Rubenstein, Zvi Septimus, Dov Weiss, and Barry Scott Wimpfheimer.

Sovereignty and the Sacred: Secularism and the Political Economy of Religion By Robert A. Yelle
2018 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 022658545X | PDF | 2 MB
Sovereignty and the Sacred challenges contemporary models of polity and economy through a two-step engagement with the history of religions. Beginning with the recognition of the convergence in the history of European political theology between the sacred and the sovereign as creating "states of exception"-that is, moments of rupture in the normative order that, by transcending this order, are capable of re-founding or remaking it-Robert A. Yelle identifies our secular, capitalist system as an attempt to exclude such moments by subordinating them to the calculability of laws and markets. The second step marshals evidence from history and anthropology that helps us to recognize the contribution of such states of exception to ethical life, as a means of release from the legal or economic order. Yelle draws on evidence from the Hebrew Bible to English deism, and from the Aztecs to ancient India, to develop a theory of polity that finds a place and a purpose for those aspects of religion that are often marginalized and dismissed as irrational by Enlightenment liberalism and utilitarianism.Developing this close analogy between two elemental domains of society, Sovereignty and the Sacred offers a new theory of religion while suggesting alternative ways of organizing our political and economic life. By rethinking the transcendent foundations and liberating potential of both religion and politics, Yelle points to more hopeful and ethical modes of collective life based on egalitarianism and popular sovereignty. Deliberately countering the narrowness of currently dominant economic, political, and legal theories, he demonstrates the potential of a revived history of religions to contribute to a rethinking of the foundations of our political and social order.

Tanya Lyons, "South Sudanese Diaspora in Australia and New Zealand: Reconciling the Past With the Present"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 1443847526 | PDF | pages: 343 | 2.1 mb
Since 1996, approximately 30,000 South Sudanese people have immigrated to Australia and New Zealand via humanitarian pathways. This text offers insight into these associated communities' resettlement experiences and provides a broader sociological context in which the South Sudanese diaspora can be seen within global migration studies. The text's strength is its close relationship to the work of culturally and disciplinarily diverse scholars bringing contemporary research on South Sudanese resettlement together in one book. This collection provides: contemporary research that critically examines the experiences of South Sudanese settlement and its associated successes, concerns and challenges; social, theoretical, historical and policy implications associated with resettlement; and an informed and reflective focus on substantive resettlement issues such as education, health, housing, Australian and customary law, employment, integration and discrimination. Current demographics of the South Sudanese not available elsewhere. The South Sudanese community is one of Australia's fastest growing new populations, and yet there are limited understandings of their experiences, concerns, aspirations and the associated implications for being able to meaningfully participate in Australian and New Zealand public life. This edited text provides a focused collection of research by established and emerging researchers who offer insight into the complexities, opportunities and challenges related to the lived experiences of resettlement.
