British Literature in Transition, 1940-1960 Postwar
Gill Plain, "British Literature in Transition, 1940-1960: Postwar"
English | ISBN: 1107119014 | 2019 | 438 pages | PDF | 3 MB
'Postwar' is both a period and a state of mind, a sensibility comprised of hope, fear and fatigue in which British society and its writers paradoxically yearned both for political transformation and a nostalgic re-instatement of past securities. From the Labour landslide victory of 1945 to the emergence of the Cold War and the humiliation of Suez in 1956, this was a period of radical political transformation in Britain and beyond, but these changes resisted literary assimilation. Arguing that writing and history do not map straightforwardly one onto the other, and that the postwar cannot easily be fitted into the explanatory paradigms of modernism or postmodernism, this book offers a more nuanced recognition of what was written and read in the period. From wartime radio writing to 1950s travellers, cold war poetry to radical theatre, magazine cultures to popular fiction, this volume examines important debates that animated postwar Britain.

Britain's Two World Wars against Germany Myth, Memory and the Distortions of Hindsight (Cambridge Military Histories
Brian Bond, "Britain's Two World Wars against Germany: Myth, Memory and the Distortions of Hindsight (Cambridge Military Histories "
English | ISBN: 1107659132 | 2014 | 199 pages | PDF | 976 KB
Britain's role and performance in the two World Wars continues to generate considerable debate but the wars are rarely considered together. Leading military historian Brian Bond here challenges the popular view of the First World War as catastrophic and futile in contrast to the Second World War as a well-conducted and victorious moral crusade. He focuses on the key issues which have caused controversy and distortion, to demonstrate how these views became deeply rooted in popular culture in the years since 1945. These issues range from policy and strategy, combat experience, the attritional strategies of naval blockade and strategic bombing to British generalship, and gains and losses in the aftermath of both wars. He also considers the learning process of the British Army in both world wars. He boldly concludes that in a number of important respects Britain was more successful in the First World War than in the Second.

Boy Actors in Early Modern England Skill and Stagecraft in the Theatre
Harry R. McCarthy, "Boy Actors in Early Modern England: Skill and Stagecraft in the Theatre"
English | ISBN: 1009098950 | 2022 | 320 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Boy Actors in Early Modern England: Skill and Stagecraft in the Theatre provides a new approach to the study of early modern boy actors, offering a historical re-appraisal of these performers' physical skills in order to reassess their wide-reaching contribution to early modern theatrical culture. Ranging across drama performed from the 1580s to the 1630s by all-boy and adult companies alike, the book argues that the exuberant physicality fostered in boy performers across the early modern repertory shaped not only their own performances, but how and why plays were written for them in the first place. Harry R. McCarthy's ground-breaking approach to boy performance draws on detailed analysis of a wide range of plays, thorough interrogation of the cultural contexts in which they were written and performed, and present-day practice-based research, offering a critical reimagining of this important and unique facet of early modern theatrical culture.

Boardwalk Empire The Birth, High Times and the Corruption of Atlantic City
Johnson, Nucky, Nelson, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and the Corruption of Atlantic City"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0091941326 | EPUB | pages: 304 | 1.4 mb
"When I was first approached by HBO to use Nelson Johnson's book as the basis for a TV series, my biggest challenge was choosing a time period in which to set it...Ultimately I settled on the 1920s of Atlantic City's legendary treasurer Nucky Johnson...A place of spectacle, shady politics, fast women and backroom deals". (Terence Winter, Emmy Award-winning writer of "The Sopranos" and Executive Producer of Boardwalk Empire). From its humble beginnings as a fledgling seaside resort, Atlantic City grew to be America's playground - loud, brash, and dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. In 1920 alcohol was banned across the States under Prohibition, yet, thanks to racketeers and corrupt politicians, the liquor in Atlantic City never stopped flowing. As the brothels, bars and gambling rooms flourished, the reputation of both the city itself and its most famous resident grew. Enoch 'Nucky' Johnson was a powerful political force and leading figure in organised crime. His corrupt alliance created a city where the rules just didn't apply, the dollar ruled and the law could be bought. The book that inspired the HBO series, "Boardwalk Empire" brings to life Nucky and the whole cast of his shady associates. Recounting the life of this fascinating city and its most colourful residents, it's a brilliantly told story of a city built on cards and dice, booze and broads.

Blue Economy and Smart Sea Transport Systems Maritime Security
Blue Economy and Smart Sea Transport Systems: Maritime Security
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031216334 | 97 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 0.8 MB
Focusing on maritime security, this book discusses Blue Economy and Smart sea transport systems in the context of the Indian Ocean rim countries and the multifaceted challenges that they are likely to face while attempting to develop such systems. It introduces Blue Economy as a concept with an emphasis on lower costs, reduced waste, greater efficiency, and value addition in all services associated with the near and deep oceans, with the establishment of Smart sea transport systems as the adaptive response in a global trade system. It highlights the roles of maritime security in politics, economics, and environmental management issues that constitute the challenges of achieving such goals. In this regard, the authors approach the issues from the institutional perspective to examine ways in which relevant transport and supply chain stakeholders can collaborate to build secure, resilient global systems of maritime trade. This book will be of interest to anyone interested in marine policy and global supply chains, especially in maritime security, its impacts and risks on transport and supply chain infrastructures, and the related socioeconomic activities likely to be affected. Readers will gain insight into the effective ways to adapt to such risks and how to benefit from the generated opportunities on transport, supply chains, and the global economy. Also, it is an ideal companion to policymakers and practitioners who are eager to learn about the dynamics between maritime security and Blue Economy which, in turn, enhances the quality of strategic planning, policies, and practices in addressing these issues. Finally, it inspires researchers and postgraduate students to conduct innovative research on this topic.

Bird Migration across the Himalayas Wetland Functioning amidst Mountains and Glaciers
Herbert H. T. Prins, "Bird Migration across the Himalayas: Wetland Functioning amidst Mountains and Glaciers"
English | ISBN: 1107114713 | 2017 | 458 pages | PDF | 42 MB
Birds migrating across the Himalayan region fly over the highest peaks in the world, facing immense physiological and climatic challenges. The authors show the different strategies used by birds to cope with these challenges. Many wetland avian species are seen in the high-altitude lakes of the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan Plateau, such as Bar-Headed Geese. Ringing programmes have generated information about origins and destinations, and this book is the first to present information on the bird's exact migratory paths. Capitalising on knowledge generated through satellite telemetry, the authors describe the migratory routes of a multitude of birds flying over or skirting the Himalayas. The myriad of threats to migratory birds and the wetland system in the Central Asian Flyway are discussed, with ways to mitigate them. This volume will inform and persuade policy-makers and conservation practitioners to take appropriate measures for the long-term survival of this unique migration.
