Virginia Woolf's Unwritten Histories: Conversations with the Nineteenth Century By Anne Besnault
2021 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0367354969 | PDF | 20 MB
Virginia Woolf's Unwritten Histories explores the interrelatedness of Woolf's modernism, feminism, and her understanding of history as a site of knowledge and a writing practice that enabled her to negotiate her heritage, to find her place among the moderns as a female artist and intellectual, and to elaborate her poetics of the "new": not as radical rupture but as the result of a process of unwriting and rewriting "traditional" historiographical orthodoxies. Its central argument is that unless we comprehend the genealogy of Woolf's historical thought and the complexity of its lineage, we cannot fully grasp the innovative thrust of her attempt to "think back through our mothers." Bringing together canonical texts such as Orlando (1928), A Room of One's Own (1929), Three Guineas (1938) or Between the Acts (1941) and under-researched ones ― among which stand Woolf's essays on historians and reviews of history books and her pieces on literary history and nineteenth-century women's literature ― this book argues that Woolf's textual "conversations" with nineteenth-century writers, historians and critics, many of which remain unexplored, are interwoven with her historiographical poeisis and constitute the groundwork for her alternative histories and literary histories: "unwritten," open-textured, unacademic and polemical counter-narratives that keep track of the past and engage politically with the future.

Andrew Pepper, "Unwilling Executioner: Crime Fiction and the State"
English | ISBN: 0198831129 | 2019 | 288 pages | PDF | 1206 KB
What gives crime fiction its distinctive shape and form? What makes it such a compelling vehicle of social and political critique? Unwilling Executioner argues that the answer lies in the emerging genre's complex and intimate relationship with the bureaucratic state and modern capitalism, and the contradictions that ensue once the state assumes control of the criminal justice system. This study offers a dramatic new interpretation of the genre's emergence and evolution over a three hundred year period and as a genuinely transnational phenomenon. From its roots in the tales of criminality circulated widely in Paris and London in the early eighteenth century, this book examines the extraordinary richness, diversity, and complexity of the genre's subsequent thematizations of crime and policing―moving from France and Britain and from continental Europe and the United States to other parts of the globe. In doing so it offers new ways of reading established crime novelists like

English | 2011 | pages: 82 | ISBN: 1448855675 | PDF | 10,6 mb
The Federal Reserve-the central bank of the U.S.-has long been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Its deliberations and actions have often occurred far from the public eye, yet its decisions have a profound impact on ordinary citizens. This book introduces readers to the history, structure, and operations of the Fed and shows exactly how its decisions impact both the nation's economy and its citizens. As the Fed makes its deliberations and decision-making more and more transparent to the public, and as the nation continues its recovery from the recession, this book could not be more timely or needful.
