Social Psychology in the Philippine Context by Ma. Elizabeth J. Macapagal, Mira Alexis P. Ofreneo, Cristina J. Montiel, Jocelyn M. Nolasco
2013 | ISBN: 971550678X | English | 243 pages | PDF | 1.3 MB
'Students deserve far better than to be only taught traditional social psychology. Those living in non-Western societies have rich histories and distinct normative systems, with their own indigenous social issues and patterns of social life. They have their own distinct needs from social psychology. This volume presents a serious effort to develop social psychology that is "appropriate" for Philippine society, something called for but neglected over many decades.'

Social Domains of Truth: Science, Politics, Art, and Religion
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032378034 | 341 Pages | PDF (True) | 2 MB
Truth is in trouble. In response, this book presents a new conception of truth. It recognizes that prominent philosophers have questioned whether the idea of truth is important. Some have asked why we even need it. Their questions reinforce broader trends in Western society, where many wonder whether or why we should pursue truth. Indeed, some pundits say we have become a "post-truth" society. Yet there are good reasons not to embrace the cultural Zeitgeist or go with the philosophical flow, reasons to regard truth as a substantive and socially significant idea.

Simcoe's Rangers: The History of the British Queen's Rangers during the Revolutionary War by Charles River Editors
English | December 17, 2016 | ISBN: 1541158296 | 57 pages | EPUB | 1.38 Mb
*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of Simcoe's Rangers and their battles *Includes footnotes, online resources, and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents The American Revolution is replete with seminal moments that every American learns in school, from the "shot heard 'round the world" to the Declaration of Independence, but the events that led up to the fighting at Lexington & Concord were borne out of 10 years of division between the British and their American colonies over everything from colonial representation in governments to taxation, the nature of searches, and the quartering of British regulars in private houses. From 1764-1775, a chain of events that included lightning rods like the Townshend Acts led to bloodshed in the form of the Boston Massacre, while the Boston Tea Party became a symbol of nonviolent protest. The political and military nature of the Revolutionary War was just as full of intrigue. While disorganized militias fought the Battles of Lexington & Concord, George Washington would lead the Continental Army in the field while men like Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and Benjamin Franklin negotiated overseas in France. Benedict Arnold would become one of his nation's most vital war heroes and its most notorious traitor, French forces would play a crucial role at the end of the war, and the Treaty of Paris would conclude the Revolution with one last great surprise. However, while the bigger pitched battles are well known, a lot of clandestine fighting and espionage took place behind the scenes, and it contributed to the results of the American Revolution. Much of this was undertaken by spies like Nathan Hale and spymasters like John Andre, but both sides also employed irregular units known colloquially as partisans. Among these irregulars, the best known were the Queen's Rangers, which fought in the Seven Years War and played a big role in the Revolution, both for traditional methods of warfare and for hunting down colonists as part of specific missions. Most recently, the Queen's Rangers have played a central role in the AMC series Turn, a dramatization of the Culper Ring spies in Long Island and New York City who worked on behalf of George Washington and the Continental Army. The series has featured the partisan unit's two famous leaders, John Graves Simcoe and Robert Rogers, and like other spy tales, theirs is a story of courage fraught with constant suspense at being found out and facing a caught spy's usual fate of imprisonment and execution. However, by making Rogers one of the most enigmatic characters on the show and making Simcoe the prime villain, the series actually obscures just how long and productive career the latter actually had in North America. In fact, the real story of Simcoe and Simcoe's Rangers needs no embellishment, because it was plenty interesting enough. Simcoe's Rangers: The History of the British Queen's Rangers during the Revolutionary War chronicles the tumultuous history of one of the most important cities of antiquity. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Byblos like never before.

Sidon: The History and Legacy of the Ancient Phoenician City by Charles River Editors
English | December 17, 2016 | ISBN: 1541157869 | 77 pages | EPUB | 1.52 Mb
*Includes pictures *Includes ancient accounts of Sidon *Includes a bibliography for further reading Of all the peoples of the ancient Near East, the Phoenicians are among the most recognizable but also perhaps the least understood. The Phoenicians never built an empire like the Egyptians and Assyrians; in fact, the Phoenicians never created a unified Phoenician state but instead existed as independent city-state kingdoms scattered throughout the Mediterranean region. However, despite the fact there was never a "Phoenician Empire," the Phoenicians proved to be more prolific in their exploration and colonization than any other peoples in world history until the Spanish during the Age of Discovery. The Phoenicians were well-known across different civilizations throughout the ancient world, and their influence can be felt across much of the West today because they are credited with inventing the forerunner to the Greek alphabet, from which the Latin alphabet was directly derived. Nonetheless, the Phoenicians left behind few written texts, so modern historians have been forced to reconstruct their past through a variety of ancient Egyptians, Assyrian, Babylonian, Greek, and Roman sources. It's not even clear what the Phoenicians called themselves, because the name "Phoenician" is derived from the Greek word "phoinix", which possibly relates to the dyes they produced and traded (Markoe 2000, 10). The mystery of the ancient Phoenicians is further compounded by the fact that archaeologists have only been able to excavate small sections of the three primary Phoenician cities: Byblos, Sidon, and Tyre. For centuries, the port city of Sidon served as the capital of the Phoenician homeland, the administrative center of their maritime trading network, and the holy center of one of the most popular Levantine religious cults. Located in southern Phoenicia about 30 miles south of the present-day Lebanese capital of Beirut, the settlement has a narrative that stretches far into the depths of prehistory. The oldest archaeological remains date from the second half of the 4th millennium BCE. The history of Sidon, as with other Phoenician cities, constantly fluctuated between freedom and subjection. Its privileged geographical position on the coast was the source of its commercial development and its openness to foreign cultures, but in doing so the prosperous city became coveted by numerous conquerors. It passed through the successive influence of Egypt, the neighboring Phoenician city-state of Tyre, and eventually flourished under Persian rule as the seat of a satrap for the whole Euphrates region. The Persian king frequently made use of the renowned Sidonian fleet during his military campaigns, and the kings of Sidon were greatly rewarded for their services. During the campaigns of Alexander the Great, Sidon opened its doors to the young Macedonian, who chose to depose the long lasting dynasty of Sidonian kings. It later became the battleground between the Arab caliphates and European Crusaders during the Middle Ages in a conflict that in many ways continues to shape the region to this day. Like many other cities in the Levant, Sidon has been continuously inhabited over the centuries, and despite the transformations brought by multiple civilizations that succeeded the Phoenicians, the city maintained a thoroughly ancient identity and original character into the modern period. Nonetheless, much of its ancient history remains shrouded in mystery, not only by a lack of systematic archaeological excavation but also because much of its heritage has been lost through conflict and looting by treasure hunters throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. To this day a great amount of Sidon's archaeological assets are the property of foreign museum collections.

Showing Time - Continuous Pictorial Narrative and the Adam and Eve Story: In Memory of Alberto Argenton
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031136616 | 429 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 83 MB
How does a visual artist manage to narrate a story, which has a sequential and therefore temporal progression, using a static medium consisting solely of spatial sign elements and, what is more, in a single image? This is the question on which this work is based, posed by its designer, Alberto Argenton, to whose memory it is dedicated. The first explanation usually given by scholars in the field is that the artist solves the problem by depicting the same character in a number of scenes, thus giving indirect evidence of events taking place at different times. This book shows that artists, in addition to the repetition of characters, devise other spatial perceptual-representational strategies for organising the episodes that constitute a story and, therefore, showing time. Resorting to the psychology of art of a Gestalt matrix, the book offers ha formattato: Italiano (Italia) Codice campo modificato ha formattato: Italiano (Italia) ha formattato: Italiano (Italia) researchers, graduates, advanced undergraduates, and professionals a description of a large continuous pictorial narrative repertoire (1000 works) and an in-depth analysis of the perceptual-representational strategies employed by artists from the 6th to the 17th century in a group of 100 works narrating the story of Adam and Eve.
