Rules and ethics: Perspectives from anthropology and history By Morgan Clarke (editor), Emily Corran (editor)
2021 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 1526148900 | PDF | 7 MB
This book investigates the pronounced enthusiasm that many traditions display for codes of ethics characterised by a multitude of rules. Recent anthropological interest in ethics and historical explorations of 'self-fashioning' have led to extensive study of the virtuous self, but existing scholarship tends to pass over the kind of morality that involves legalistic reasoning. Rules and ethics corrects that omission by demonstrating the importance of rules in everyday moral life in a variety of contexts. In a nutshell, it argues that legalistic moral rules are not necessarily an obstruction to a rounded ethical self, but can be an integral part of it. An extended introduction first sets out the theoretical basis for studies of ethical systems that are characterised by detailed rules. This is followed by a series of empirical studies of rule-oriented moral traditions in a comparative perspective.

Luke Bretherton, "Resurrecting Democracy: Faith, Citizenship, and the Politics of a Common Life "
English | ISBN: 1107641969 | 2014 | 492 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Through a case study of community organizing in the global city of London and an examination of the legacy of Saul Alinsky around the world, this book assesses the construction of citizenship as an identity, a performance, and a shared rationality. Part I identifies and depicts a consociational, populist, and "faithfully secular" vision of democratic citizenship by reflecting on the different strands of thought and practice that feed into and help constitute community organizing. Particular attention is given to how organizing mediates the relationship between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism and those without a religious commitment in order to forge a common life. Part II then unpacks the implications of this vision for how we respond to the spheres in which citizenship is enacted, namely, civil society, the sovereign nation-state, and the globalized economy.

Kain Ramsay, "Responsibility Rebellion: An Unconventional Approach to Personal Empowerment"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 154450912X, 1544509138 | 270 pages | EPUB | 0.31 MB
Many of us crave more fulfillment in life, but we don't know how to find it. We try everything to feel better, from changing jobs and dating new people, to attending therapy and taking pills. We grasp at the superficial, and externally overcompensate for our internal voids and self-doubts. What we don't realize is that avoiding responsibility only postpones the inevitable-that nothing about our life changes until we change.
