Living Gently in a Violent World The Prophetic Witness of Weakness
Free Download Living Gently in a Violent World: The Prophetic Witness of Weakness by Stanley Hauerwas, Jean Vanier
English | July 3, 2018 | ISBN: 0830834966 | 128 pages | EPUB | 0.66 Mb
How are Christians to live in a violent and wounded world? Rather than contending for privilege by wielding power and authority, we can witness prophetically from a position of weakness. The church has much to learn from an often-overlooked community―those with disabilities. In this fascinating book, theologian Stanley Hauerwas collaborates with Jean Vanier, founder of the worldwide L'Arche communities. For many years, Hauerwas has reflected on the lives of people with disability, the political significance of community, and how the experience of disability addresses the weaknesses and failures of liberal society. And L'Arche provides a unique model of inclusive community that is underpinned by a deep spirituality and theology. Together, Vanier and Hauerwas carefully explore the contours of a countercultural community that embodies a different way of being and witnesses to a new order―one marked by radical forms of gentleness, peacemaking, and faithfulness. The authors' explorations shed light on what it means to be human and how we are to live. The robust voice of Hauerwas and the gentle words of Vanier offer a synergy of ideas that, if listened to carefully, will lead the church to a fresh practicing of peace, love and friendship. This invigorating conversation is for everyday Christians who desire to live faithfully in a world that is violent and broken. This expanded edition now includes a study guide for individual reflection or group discussion.

Lived Wisdom in Jewish Antiquity Studies in Exercise and Exemplarity
Free Download Lived Wisdom in Jewish Antiquity: Studies in Exercise and Exemplarity By Elisa Uusimäki
2021 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 0567697959 | PDF | 2 MB
Moving away from focusing on wisdom as a literary genre, this book delves into the lived, embodied and formative dimensions of wisdom as they are delineated in Jewish sources from the Persian, Hellenistic and early Roman eras. Considering a diverse body of texts beyond later canonical boundaries, the book demonstrates that wisdom features not as an abstract quality, but as something to be performed and exercised at both the individual and community level. The analysis specifically concentrates on notions of a 'wise' person, including the rise of the sage as an exemplary figure. It also looks at how ancestral figures and contemporary teachers are imagined to manifest and practice wisdom, and considers communal portraits of a wise and virtuous life. In so doing, the author demonstrates that the previous focus on wisdom as a category of literature has overshadowed significant questions related to wisdom, behaviour and social life. Jewish wisdom is also contextualized in relation to its wider ancient Mediterranean milieu, making the book valuable for biblical scholars, classicists, scholars of religion and the ancient Near East and theologians.

: The "fall" in New England is truly unique, rivalled only in small areas of Japan. This is the story of our three week tour of the New England states in September/October 2015. We toured the Maine Coast, ate lobsters, and visited its quaint coastal villages, then we motored through New Hampshire to spend a wonderful week in the mountains of Vermont. Here we had the very best of the "fall" - a magnificent kaleidoscope of autumn colours. Following route 100 south we arrived at the Atlantic seaport of Mystic then spent another week exploring this picturesque and historic coastline. We visited Rhode Island, toured the mansions of Newport and explored the landing places of the Pilgrims in 1620 - Cape Cod and Plymouth.

Law's Rule The Nature, Value, and Viability of the Rule of Law
Free Download Law's Rule: The Nature, Value, and Viability of the Rule of Law
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0190645342 | 394 Pages | PDF (True) | 4 MB
The rule of law, once widely embraced and emulated, now faces serious threats to its viability. To get our bearings we must return to first principles. This book articulates and defends a comprehensive, coherent, and compelling conception of the rule of law and defends it against serious challenges to its intelligibility, relevance, and normative force. The rule of law's ambition, it argues, is to provide protection and recourse against the arbitrary exercise of power using the distinctive tools of the law. Law provides a bulwark of protection, a bridle on the powerful, and a bond constituting and holding together the polity and giving public expression to an ideal mode of association. Two principles immediately follow from this core: sovereignty of law, demanding that those who exercise ruling power govern with law and that law governs them, and equality in the eyes of the law, demanding that law's protection extend to all bound by it. Animating law's rule, the ethos of fidelity commits all members of the political community, officials and lay members alike, to take responsibility for holding each other accountable under the law. Part I articulates this conception and locates its moral foundation in a commitment to common membership of each person, recognizing their freedom, dignity, and status as peers. Part II addresses serious challenges currently facing law's rule: finding a place in the legal system for equity, mercy, and effective responses to emergencies, taming the new leviathans of the digital world, and extending law's rule beyond national borders.
