Snitch Informants, Cooperators, and the Corruption of Justice
Free Download Ethan Brown, "Snitch: Informants, Cooperators, and the Corruption of Justice"
English | ISBN: 1586484923 | 2007 | 288 pages | EPUB | 453 KB
Our criminal justice system favors defendants who know how to play the "5K game": criminals who are so savvy about the cooperation process that they repeatedly commit serious crimes knowing they can be sent back to the streets if they simply cooperate with prosecutors. In Snitch, investigative reporter Ethan Brown shows through a compelling series of case profiles how the sentencing guidelines for drug-related offenses, along with the 5K1.1 section, have unintentionally created a "cottage industry of cooperators," and led to fabricated evidence. The result is wrongful convictions and appallingly gruesome crimes, including the grisly murder of the Harvey family in Richmond, Virginia and the well-publicized murder of Imette St. Guillen in New York City.

Slavery and the Forensic Theatricality of Human Rights in the Spanish Empire
Free Download Slavery and the Forensic Theatricality of Human Rights in the Spanish Empire
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031315308 | 440 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 12 MB
This book is a study of the forensic theatricality of human rights claims in literary texts about slavery in the sixteenth and the nineteenth century in the Spanish Empire. The book centers on the question: how do literary texts use theatrical, multisensorial strategies to denunciate the violence against enslaved people and make a claim for their rights? The Spanish context is particularly interesting because of its early tradition of human rights thinking in the Salamanca School (especially Bartolomé de Las Casas), developed in relation to slavery and colonialism. Taking its point of departure in forensic aesthetics, the book analyzes five forms of non-narrative theatricality: allegorical, carnivalesque, tragicomic, melodramatic and tragic.

Slavery Obscured The Social History of the Slave Trade in an English Provincial Port
Free Download Madge Dresser, "Slavery Obscured: The Social History of the Slave Trade in an English Provincial Port"
English | 2007 | pages: 258 | ISBN: 1474291694, 0826448763 | PDF | 148,0 mb
Slavery Obscured aims to assess how the slave trade affected the social life and cultural outlook of the citizens of a major English city, and contends that its impact was more profound than has previously been acknowledged. Based on original research in archives in Britain and America, this title builds on scholarship in the economic history of the slave trade to ask questions about the way slave-derived wealth underpinned the city of Bristol's urban development and its growing gentility. How much did Bristol's Georgian renaissance owe to such wealth? Who were the major players and beneficiaries of the African and West Indian trades? How, in an ever-changing historical environment, were enslaved Africans represented in the city's press, theatre and political discourse? What do previously unexplored religious, legal and private records tell us about the black presence in Bristol or about the attitudes of white seamen, colonists and merchants towards slavery and race? What role did white women and artisans play in Bristol's anti-slavery movement?

Sift Memories of Childhood
Free Download SAIL Lawrence, "Sift: Memories of Childhood"
English | ISBN: 1907605002 | 2010 | pages | EPUB | 238 KB
Sift is the memoir of writer and poet Lawrence Sail s formative years in post-war Exeter. Sail paints a wonderfully evocative picture of British life in the 1940s and 50s, while exploring the richness and bafflements of a child s life. Most families know the true history of time and chance the sift of who and what survives, what is spoken of or glossed over; the stubborn objects outliving their owners passion for them; the oddities of fashion; the co-editing of memory, forgetfulness and the need to forget... Praise for Sift: "A most compelling read the intensity of detail, the moments of drama, the sense of the post-war period and, above all, it is marvellously written." Penelope Lively "Sift is a brilliantly atmospheric recreation of a post-war childhood. Lawrence Sail explores the absence of his German artist father, his mother s determination to bring up her twin s singlehanded, and his own heritage in a memoir which is beautifully written, candid, funny and moving." Helen Dunmore

Shaligram Pilgrimage in the Nepal Himalayas
Free Download Holly Walters, "Shaligram Pilgrimage in the Nepal Himalayas"
English | 2020 | pages: 295 | ISBN: 946372172X | PDF | 5,2 mb
For roughly two thousand years, the veneration of sacred fossil ammonites, called Shaligrams, has been an important part of Hindu and Buddhist ritual practice throughout South Asia and among the global Diaspora. Originating from a single remote region of Himalayan Nepal, called Mustang, Shaligrams are all at once fossils, divine beings, and intimate kin with families and worshippers. Through their lives, movements, and materiality, Shaligrams then reveal fascinating new dimensions of religious practice, pilgrimage, and politics. But as social, environmental, and national conflicts in the politically-contentious region of Mustang continue to escalate, the geologic, mythic, and religious movements of Shaligrams have come to act as parallels to the mobility of people through both space and time. Shaligram mobility therefore traverses through multiple social worlds, multiple religions, and multiple nations revealing Shaligram practitioners as a distinct, alternative, community struggling for a place in a world on the edge.
