Free Download William Bülow, "Heritage and War: Ethical Issues"
English | ISBN: 0192862642 | 2023 | 224 pages | PDF | 1251 KB
The world responded with horror to ISIS's campaign of destruction of cultural heritage across the Middle East, including with calls for an international response to prevent such damage. At the same time, newspapers and screens were filled with images of human destruction, devastated cities, and thousands of refugees fleeing the conflict. This juxtaposition caused a backlash against those voicing their concerns about the destruction of ancient ruins, popularly framed as dispute about 'stone versus lives'. In the face of so much human suffering, it can seem inappropriate to worry about anything but the urgent, basic needs of people.

Free Download Laura Landweber, "Genetics and the Extinction of Species"
English | ISBN: 0691009716 | | 192 pages | PDF | 16 MB
Darwin's Origin of Species and Dobzhansky's Genetics and the Origin of Species have been the cornerstones of modern evolutionary and population genetic theory for the past hundred years, but in the twenty-first century, biologists will face graver problems of extinction. In this collection, a team of leading biologists demonstrates why the burgeoning field of conservation biology must continue to rely on the insights of population genetics if we are to preserve the diversity of living species. Technological and theoretical developments throughout the 1990s have allowed for important new insights into how populations have evolved in response to past selection pressures, while providing a broad new understanding of the genetic structure of natural populations. The authors explore these advances and argue for the applicability of new genetic methods in conservation biology.

Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest influencers in the world, was himself influenced by trailblazing thinkers and writers like Tolstoy, Ruskin, Thoreau, and others-each one contributing significantly to his moral and spiritual development. Yet only a few people know the most consequential person to have played a pivotal role in the making of the Mahatma: Shrimad Rajchandra. About the unparalleled influence of this person, Gandhi himself wrote: "I have met many a religious leader or teacher... and I must say that no one else ever made on me the impression that Raychandbhai did."

Free Download Theodore Sabo, "From Monophysitism to Nestorianism"
English | ISBN: 1527504123 | 2018 | 135 pages | PDF | 1292 KB
The most important Christological controversies were waged during the Third through the Sixth Ecumenical Councils. This book argues that each of these councils can be characterized by the labels Nestorian, Monophysite, or proto-Monophysite. In the Third and Fourth Councils a Nestorian or Antiochene victory followed a Monophysite one, and the pattern was repeated identically with the Fifth and Sixth Councils. If this seems to damage the religious interpretation of the councils as the slow hammering out of orthodoxy or to contradict the current interpretation of the councils, it is not meant to. In contrast to R. V. Sellers, the distinctions between the Alexandrian and Antiochene approaches to Christology are maintained, and each council is labeled as coming down on one or the other of the two sides. The books title reflects a half-truth. Orthodox Christology, at least until the outbreak of the Iconoclastic crisis, was characterized by a progression from the deifying and unifying impulse of the Alexandrian school in favor of the humanizing and dichotomizing tendency of the Antiochene. However, this book does not affirm anything other than that early orthodoxy successfully navigated the often narrow strait between Nestorianism and Monophysitism. By continually changing sides, and by declaring the decrees of all previous councils binding, it found itself outwitting both the Monophysites and the Nestorians.

Free Download From Hospitality to Grace: A Julian Pitt-Rivers Omnibus By Julian Pitt-Rivers, Giovanni da Col (editor), Andrew Shryock (editor)
2017 | 546 Pages | ISBN: 0986132527 | PDF | 4 MB
The Pitt-Rivers Omnibus brings together the definitive essays and lectures of the influential social anthropologist Julian A. Pitt-Rivers, a corpus of work that has, until now, remained scattered, untranslated, and unedited. Illuminating the themes and topics that he engaged throughout his life-including hospitality, grace, the symbolic economy of reciprocity, kinship, the paradoxes of friendship, ritual logics, the anthropology of dress, and more-this omnibus brings his reflections to new life. Holding Pitt-Rivers's diversity of subjects and ethnographic foci in the same gaze, this book reveals a theoretical unity that ran through his work and highlights his iconic wit and brilliance. Striking at the heart of anthropological theory, the pieces here explore the relationship between the mental and the material, between what is thought and what is done. Classic, definitive, and yet still extraordinarily relevant for contemporary anthropology, Pitt-Rivers's lifetime contribution will provide a new generation of anthropologists with an invaluable resource for reflection on both ethnographic and theoretical issues.
