English | ISBN: 3110791013 | 2023 | 350 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
This monograph provides an alternative model for looking at the old question about Paul and the mysteries in a new light. Specifically, this study compares rituals-baptism in the Pauline communities and the initiation rituals of the mysteries-through the lens of cultural anthropology and the sociology of religion. Three research questions lead the project: What benefits does each initiation ritual promise its participants? What are the underlying messages or structures that guarantee the efficacy of those rituals? How and to what extent is the initiation ritual connected to the participants' cognition and ethics beyond initiation itself? Taking those questions as the analytical framework, this study substantiates two points: first, in terms of ritual messages, baptism in the Pauline communities is a ritual analogous to mystery initiation, and second, Paul is an innovative interpreter of ritual who recalibrates the messages of preexisting rituals for his theological and ethical program, seeking to radically extend the implications of initiation to the embodied life of every Christ-believer. Students and scholars of New Testament, early Christianity, classics, and ritual studies will benefit from engaging this volume.

A cultural revolution in England, France, and the United States beginning during the time of the industrial and political revolutions helped usher in modernity. This cultural revolution worked alongside the better documented political and economic revolutions to usher in the modern era of continuous revolution. Focusing on the period between 1847 and 1937, the book examines in depth six of the cultural "battles" that were key parts of this revolution: the novels of the Brontë sisters, the paintings of the Impressionists, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, the Ballets Russes production of

English | ISBN: 3110786826 | 2023 | 270 pages | EPUB, PDF | 20 MB + 161 MB
In chemistry, good problem-solving requires a balanced combination of scientific intuition and methodical analysis. Additionally, thoughtfully presented diagrams and infographics can convey a large amount of complex information in a more intuitive and accessible manner. 100 Must-Know Mechanisms (Second Edition) strives to be at the intersection of these two key principles. Its thorough visualizations enable experienced readers to use it as a quick reference for specific mechanisms of interest. At the same time, the book's breadth of covered reactions, from classic to cutting-edge, make it a good study-aid for the developing chemist. A slow and consistent study of the entire series of mechanisms can help set the foundation for good scientific intuition, while its detailed infographics and careful navigation features encourage coming back to it frequently. This edition includes over 40 new illustrations, numerous new mechanistic schemes, enhanced original figures with a variety of real-case examples, and more

Free Download Operatic Migrations: Transforming Works and Crossing Boundaries By Roberta Montemorra Marvin (editor), Downing A. Thomas (editor)
2006 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0754650987 | PDF | 6 MB
This volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying a wide range of subjects associated with the creation, performance and reception of 'opera' in varying social and historical contexts from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Each essay addresses migrations between genres, cultures, literary and musical works, modes of expression, media of presentation and aesthetics. Although the directions the contributions take are diverse, they converge in significant ways, particularly with the rebuttal of the notion of the singular nature of the operatic work. The volume strongly asserts that works are meaningfully transformed by the manifold circumstances of their creation and reception, and that these circumstances have an impact on the life of those works in their many transformations and on a given audience's experience of them. Topics covered include transformations of literary sources and their migration into the operatic genre; works that move across geographical and social boundaries into different cultural contexts; movements between media and/or genre as well as alterations through interpretation and performance of the composer's creation; the translation of spoken theatre to lyric theatre; the theoretical issues contingent on the rendering of 'speech' into 'song'; and the transforming effects of aesthetic considerations as they bear on opera. Crossing over disciplinary boundaries between music, literary studies, history, cultural studies and art history, the volume enriches our knowledge and understanding of the operatic experience and the works. The book will therefore appeal to those working in the field of music, literary and cultural studies, and to those with a particular interest in opera and musical theatre.

Why do so many contemporary Chinese artists use porcelain in their work? In New Export China, Alex Burchmore presents a deep dive into a unique genre of ceramic art to describe a framework for a broader art practice. Focusing on the work of four artists from the 1990s through the 2010s-Liu Jianhua, Ai Weiwei, Ah Xian, and Sin-ying Ho-Burchmore reveals how the materiality of ceramics has been used to highlight China's role in global trade and to explore the function of this medium as a vessel for the transmission of Chinese art, culture, and ideas.

Free Download Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, "Neoliberal Development in Bangladesh: People on the Margins"
English | ISBN: 9845062660 | 2019 | 374 pages | PDF | 73 MB
This book is a collection of eleven critical essays covering some of the implications of neoliberal development in Bangladesh. One of the major themes of this book is how the paradigm of neoliberalism, with its sole focus on free market, has transformed the very nature of the state. For the neoliberal states, market is both the ends and means of social wellbeing. While this 'market-directed' development approach can ensure certain levels of economic growth, it also brings out degrading quality of life, ecology and political governance. Bangladesh's experience with neoliberal development is an important case study because the country has already been recognized as a 'development paradox'. While some hail the development spree and bask in the glory of a fast-growing economy, critics of the traditional economic growth-oriented model of development point their fingers at the downsides of the same economy. The topics discussed in this book, among others, include microfinance, energy, higher education, agriculture, gender and, corruption. The editors hope that this book will serve as a useful guide and resource for understanding contemporary critical scholarship on neoliberal policies in Bangladesh.

Free Download Nationalism before the Nation State: Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self-Definition (1756-1871) By Dagmar Paulus, Ellen Pilsworth
2020 | 212 Pages | ISBN: 9004366830 | PDF | 4 MB
Long before it took political shape in the proclamation of the German Empire of 1871, a German nation-state had taken shape in the cultural imagination. Covering the period from the Seven Years' War to the Reichsgründung of 1871, Nationalism before the Nation State: Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self-Definition (1756-1871) explores how the nation was imagined by different groups, at different times, and in connection with other ideologies. Between them the eight chapters in this volume explore the connections between religion, nationalism and patriotism, and individual chapters show how marginalised voices such as women and Jews contributed to discourses on national identity. Finally, the chapters also consider the role of memory in constructing ideas of nationhood.
