Description
Reading is something we all do, but constructive reading is another level entirely. Constructive reading is a rewarding level reached by readers who understand how meaning is constructed in texts and have the strategies needed to access meaning in a purposeful way. Superficial reading results when the reader simply focusses on decoding the words; on the other hand, constructive reading results when the three phases of reading are understood and accompanying strategies are employed. A central requirement for the reader is to set a meaningful purpose for reading a particular text, then adopting strategic processes to access the meaning and make it memorable and useful. This involves making one's prior knowledge of the topic of the text explicit. This explicit prior knowledge then provides the foundation upon which new knowledge is constructed by bringing together the information in the text and the reader's contribution. As you complete this course, you will examine strategies you can apply in the pre-, during-, and post-reading stages of the process. You will understand the characteristics of three specific reading approaches — the bottom-up, top-down, and interactive approaches. Based on that understanding, you will be able to make informed decisions as to the specific approach best suited to your purpose in reading a particular text. Constant prediction and confirming constitute a core process of constructive reading, which, in turn, is central to metacognition, the mental process by which the reader keeps the reading process successful. Skimming, scanning, mapping, vocabulary building, underlining and highlighting, and summarization are fundamental skills that you will learn to apply to your reading. The presence of bias and metaphor in texts can complicate reading and have a negative effect on understanding. Learning how to identify these two elements is crucial for constructive reading.By the end of this course, you will understand how constructive reading goes far beyond the type of superficial reading that results from a narrow emphasis on comprehension of the writer's input. You will be prepared to approach reading as a purposeful meaning-making process that places value on your personal contribution as a reader. If you want to strengthen you reading skill by expanding your understanding of the reading process, then this course — "Constructive Reading" — is designed to empower to you reach your goal.
