Research Ethics 101 is designed for undergraduate university students having to complete a research project for the first time, but can also be useful to senior and postgraduate students and academics as a refresher course.When putting a research proposal together too many researchers, cramped as they might be between funding, academic, and employment deadlines, get stuck in the mechanics of the research procedure. My goal in putting the content of this course together was to ensure that researchers are fully conversant with the basic building blocks of an ethical research proposal: an appreciation of the reasons why research ethics evolved in the first place and the continued risk to people and society without it, an understanding of the guiding philosophical thinking and frameworks, and an understanding of the foundational principles which were developed to ensure the rights and safety of research participants globally. I hope that this course will give you pause to look through your research goals and methodology with a renewed or greater empathy and respect for all of the human beings behind your data.The course will also introduce you to Research Ethics Committees (RECs) / Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). RECs / IRBs aim to work WITH you, not against you, in building ethical sound research protocols. The course content covers the essentials that you need to successfully apply for REC/IRB ethics approval.Your learning will be assessed throughout the course using quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding of the course content.Join me and embark on a path towards conducting ethical research with integrity and professionalism.
